San Diego, May 2, 2015 —  Over 43 Artists from San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange County, East Coast & Mexicali created 43 visual statements of solidarity for the missing students of Ayotzinapa for the second time in the art district of historic Barrio Logan, home of Chicano Park.

Over the past seven months, the forced kidnapping of 43 Ayotzinapa students has shaken Mexico and the wave of human rights violations has shown a global spotlight  in that country. In September, dozens of students from a teaching college in the small town of Ayotzinapa in the Mexican state of Guerrero were attacked by local police. Six people were killed. The story given by police was that the police acted on the orders from the then local mayor, whose wife was worried that the students might disrupt an event she was holding, police were ordered to abduct 43 students and hand them over to “guerreros unidos,” a vicious local cartel.

Family members of the missing students do not believe the version of events put forward by Mexican authorities. An investigation into the case by Proceso magazine suggests the attack was planned, executed, and supervised by Mexico’s federal police to undermine the political fight of the students from a teacher training college in Ayotzinapa and Argentinian experts have come forward with the inconsistencies in the evidence used to “identify” the remains of one student, Alexander Mora, proving the evidence was falsified. Which now at 7 months, the families are still without answers and zero evidence of their death has been proven.

As a fundraiser for the families, each artist was given a photo and name of a student to represent with honor and support. Additional painting donations that depict the overall pain of Ayotzinapa will be shown with some of the original pieces from the first show. All pieces are for sale, and 100% of the proceeds of the paintings sold go directly to the families. Mesheeka Clothing Company will have a booth selling their local clothing brand and donating a portion of each item sold as well. Bob Green of the Roots Factory will be live screen printing their original logo for ayotzinapa for a donation if you bring a black shirt. Border X Brewing will be contributing to the fundraiser for the families as well. Music by Angel Lita, Cumbia Machin and Olmeca Roots

We want every student’s name and story remembered to keep the movement alive and continue the search for our sons…we DEMAND their SAFE RETURN.

Adapted by Stolen Lives Project, Stolen Lives Illustrated Project (SLIP)

The mission of UAPTSD’s mobilizations is to keep alive the county list of recorded people killed by law enforcement agents from 1980 to the present. Through grassroots efforts, over 200 local cases were documented.
https://uaptsd.org/victims/victims-murdered-by-sd-law-enforcement/]

Although just the tip of the iceberg, these 200+ LOCAL cases are evidence of a horrifying national epidemic of police terror. The victims of police violence were part of our society, but rarely are their lives or names publicized, or the real circumstances surrounding their deaths investigated and made known. The Stolen Lives Project aims to restore some dignity to the lives lost. Though their lives have been stolen from us, we will not allow them to be forgotten.

Remember to connect what’s happening at a national level is also happening in San Diego, The same issues that were exposed in Ferguson are in San Diego. The system of power, White Supremacy, is well and alive in San Diego, hurting marginalized communities. Let’s make sure we seek justice for them. Let’s end the occupation of our communities by Police.

Abuse of Power and Law Enforcement in San Diego

Monday, May 11, 2015 7pm Church of the Brethren 3850 Westgate Place, SD 92105

Keynote Speakers; Shakina Ortega, Aaron Harvey & Brandon Duncan

About Shakina Ortega

In June 2012, Victor Ortega was shot and killed by Officer Johnathan McCarthy. Initially, McCarthy claimed he shot Victor because his back-up gun fell from its holster and Victor reached for it. He later claimed he shot Victor because he was “too tired to continue with the arrest”. A witness heard the officer shouting “Get on the ground!” at Victor and Victor responding, “Are you kidding me?” right before he was shot. Victorwas already on the ground face down with both arms cuffed before he was shot, a police lieutenant later admitted. The Ortega family filed a federal lawsuit claiming Ortega’s civil rights were violated, and that the officer had no reason to pull the trigger.U.S. District Judge has recently noted inconsistencies in some of the statements made by McCarthy, who claimed Victor tried to take away his service weapon. There is a further inconsistency around Officer McCarthy’s use of a non-lethal Taser and the facts leading up to the struggle between McCarthy and Ortega. Victor Ortega was a loving father, husband, son, grandson, brother, nephew, cousin, and friend to many.

About Aaron Harvey & Brandon Duncan

Brandon (Tiny Doo) Duncan and Aaron Harvey were two of many young black men recently arrested and charged with “conspiring” with gang members under CA Penal Code Sec. 182.5.  This law makes a person who has been identified as a gang member by police (even if not a gang member, but falsely listed) or supports gangs (rap lyrics) responsible for any crime committed by a gang member.  The injustice was so obvious that a San Diego judge dismissed the charges against Brandon and Aaron on March 15, but many others remain charged and in jail for crimes the D.A. knows they did not commit.

On this day, thousands of students must walk out of school, take over buildings and go on strike at colleges and high schools nationwide. People must gather and march in cities all across the U.S. The normal routine of this society includes wanton police murder of Black and Brown people. Everyone must disrupt that normal routine.

Our demands are clear:

* The murder of Black and Brown people by the police MUST STOP.

* Justice for all the victims of brutal, murdering police.

* Indict, convict and send killer cops to jail—the whole damn system is guilty as hell.

Women are also victims of police brutality, whether it is rape, violence, or murder. However, oftentimes we don’t hear much about their stories in the media. These women are our sisters, daughters, mothers, friends….these women are us. They are Aiyana Stanley-Jones, Rekia Boyd, Miriam Carey, Kristina Coignard, Tarika Wilson, Jessica Hernandez and the list goes on.

Join us in solidarity with other cities nationwide as we hold a Candlelight Silent Processional for the women who are victims of police brutality. We will meet at the Rosa Parks Recreational Park and then hold a silent candle procession.

#JUSTICE4TAMIRTOOLKIT from the Coalition Against Police Violence

#JUSTICE4TAMIRTOOLKIT

On November 22, 2014, 12 year old Tamir Rice was playing on the playground at Cudell Recreation Center. It was part of his daily life. He was playing—kicking at the snow, throwing snow balls. Someone called 911 and even mentioned that it was probably a fake gun. 911 dispatcher failed to relay what the caller mentioned. Officer Timothy Loehmann shot Tamir Rice in .792 of a second. After shooting the boy, the officers failed to offer the boy any medical attention and then detained Tamir’s 14 year old sister, denying her the right to comfort her dying brother.

On March 2, 2015, the City of Cleveland blamed Tamir for his own death. Not the reckless behavior of the 911 dispatcher, not the officer who was deemed unfit for duty in 2012, but the 12 year old boy who had no warning.

It is time we stop being silent about the tragic and senseless murder of Tamir. It is time we demand justice and we can do it on the streets as well as from our homes. Please join us on March 23rd, 4 months following the passing of Tamir, we will use everything we got! Computers, cell phones, social media and demand justice for Tamir. Everything you need to be armed with is in this toolkit. Thank you!

Once you receive this toolkit, further instructions regarding changes, additions or modifications will be sent via text messaging. To receive updates, text CAPV to 77948.

Police are killing Native Americans at an alarming rate — so why isn’t anyone talking about?

There are 5.1 million American Indians and Alaska Natives in the U.S. as of 2011, significantly fewer than the country’s 45 million black Americans (as of 2013). But like black Americans, indigenous people are killed by law enforcement officers at rates that far outstrip their share of the population.

While #BlackLivesMatter evolved into a national rallying cry for racial justice over the summer, a largely overlooked #NativeLivesMatter movement has been quietly galvanizing activists as well. Few mainstream outlets report on it, but the indigenous blogosphere and Twitterverse abound with horror stories, not the least of which is that six Native men and women were killed by police in November and December alone.

Report and Photos from 1st Monthly Statewide Coordinated Actions to End Solitary Confinement, March 23

“Luis Esquivel, in the PBSP SHU for 16 years, plaintiff in Ashker v. Brown, who spoke with U.N. Rapporteur on Torture Juan Mendez, when he visited PBSP as an expert witness for the federal lawsuit on behalf of 240 prisoners held in PBSP SHU over 10 years. The suit will go to trial in December 2015 in Oakland, and supporters will be encouraged to fill the courtroom each day.

Luis’ sister, Martha Esquivel of California Families Against Solitary Confinement (CFASC) in San Diego, sent the information on Luis – whom she calls a “warrior of life” – and stories about the torture the family has gone through, with heartbreaking visits through a window and denials of phone calls when family members were dying and even after the death of their brother, because he had died in Mexico.

Four years after the death of their mother, Luis told Martha “what the so-called counselor told him just minutes after I told my brother that my mom passed away. He said to him, ‘Your father is going to need you; your family is going to need you closer. Why don’t you take advantage of debriefing?’ This is how CDCr gives rehabilitation, this is how they help?” Luis never debriefed.”

Statewide Coordinated Actions to End Solitary Confinement (SCATESC) began March 23, 2015. Actions were held in California from San Diego to Arcata (Arcata-Eureka, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Diego, San Jose, Santa Cruz) and Philadelphia, Penn. Activists in more locations will be joining in on April 23 and the 23rd of each month. Below is a report from just one locality, Santa Cruz, which took a creative approach.

by Willow Katz

About 45 people attended the first day of Statewide Coordinated Actions to End Solitary Confinement (SCATESC), on March 23, 2015, at the Lighthouse on West Cliff Drive in Santa Cruz. We went there to see the ocean for so many SHU and solitary prisoners who talk about their dream to see the ocean again, including Luis Esquivel.
