April 15th, CITY HEIGHTS is Rising for $15

April 15th, CITY HEIGHTS is Rising for $15

National Day of Action: Fight for $15 – San Diego! Promo Video https://youtu.be/qO-oeYnubzg
Edited & Produced by Aaron Leaf IRATE Productions
Video Footage by Syd Stevens

The Fight for $15 for All! is a national movement that is forcing the big corporations to rethink how they do business in America. People all across the US are participating in a historic day of action on 4/15. Together we can make sure all workers have access to good jobs that pay $15/hr so we can all support our families and live with dignity.

We will unite as a community at 1:30 here in City Heights at Rosa Parks 3795 Fairmount Ave. We will RISE UP in support of a Better City Heights for All and then get on the bus! We will join dozens of other communities at San Diego State University in a solidarity rally as workers and communities who are fighting to win Good Jobs, $15/hr and Union Rights for All!

We will travel as a community to SDSU.
Free chartered buses and food will be provided.
The bus will depart at 3:00pm and return at 8:00pm. Bring your family and friends!

“The same people being constantly victimized by police brutality are also being consistently victimized by deprivation of resources and not having access to living wage jobs,” Montague Simmons, Organization for Black Struggle

WE RISE UP for Good Jobs & Self Sufficiency

  • Because the average household income is $26,538, below the poverty line.
  • Because Africans, African-Americans and Latinos have been displaced to City Heights and like areas by gentrification. The rent is too high city-wide.
  • Because City Heights has the highest concentration of nonprofit service providers in San Diego County, with more than $265 million invested in service providers, but little evidence shows they’ve improved the lives of residents.

WE RISE UP for an END to Racial Profiling and the Systemic Criminalization of Our Communities

  • Because Blacks are stopped twice as often as their driving age demographic representation and are searched at three times – and Latinos at twice – the rate of Whites.
  • Because Racial profiling, also in the form of curfew sweeps and gang documentation make engaging in activities that are normally considered innocent, such as walking, and being out after certain hours, unlawful. Having such a record makes it hard for people to get and keep a legitimate job, attend school and maintain their housing. Often forcing people back onto the streets in order to survive, leading to prison and/or deportation.

WE RISE UP because it is time for San Diego to EMBRACE all its people

  • City Heights became home to many immigrants and refugees fleeing violence in their homelands: Ethnic Albanians from Kosovo, Central Americans, East Africans, and Kurds. More than 30 languages and 80 dialects are now spoken in City Heights. Making it one of the most ethnically diverse areas in the nation.

About April15.org

We are fast food cashiers and cooks, retail employees, home care providers, and airport workers who have come together from all over the country – and the world – to fight for $15 an hour and the right to form a union without retaliation.

We work for corporations that generate tremendous profits, but don’t pay employees enough to cover basic needs like food, health care, rent, and transportation. Most of us are adults, many of us have families to support, and far too many of us are forced to rely on public assistance to scrape by.

Low-wage jobs like ours are the fastest growing jobs in the nation, and they need to pay more so that workers like us can make ends meet, and rebuild the middle class and get the economy working again.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice: Transfer at-risk LGBT Prisoner to save his life.

On February 3, 2015, my queer and gender-nonconforming friend filed an Offender Protection Investigation (OPI) due to multiple threats on his life. An officer took advantage of his vulnerable position and coerced him into giving information in exchange for a transfer to the Safe Keeping unit. My friend kept his end of the deal, but the prison ended the investigation and ordered him back into general population where two gangs had orders to “smash him on sight.” The prison benefited from the information he told, but decided his life was not worth the effort.

My name is Shannon Snyder, and I will do everything in my power to make sure that my friend Tyler Hearne receives the basic human rights he deserves. He has been targeted as a member of the LGBT community for years, enduring theft, violence, and sexual assault. Tyler knew that the system was not designed to help him, so he stayed silent until this abuse became so unbearable he had no other choice. But the system that is in place to help at-risk inmates has made it very clear they do not care about his safety. They claim that the only way for him to prove he is at risk is to be raped or attacked again.

Due to repeated calls to the prison and the PREA Ombudsman Office, they have opened another investigation. Tyler has been placed in transient housing pending the results, but if the past investigation is any indication of how this one will it end, it is likely he will soon be back in the same life-threatening situation. The justice department has an obligation to its inmates, and it has repeatedly turned its back on them.

Please help me demand that Tyler be moved to Safe Keeping – an area designed to protect inmates who have been or are likely to be targeted for sexual assault or extortion. This is the only way he may be able to survive his sentence, repay his debt to society and move on with his life.

PETICIÓN PARA
Huntsville PREA Ombudsman Office PREA Coordinator
I am writing to voice my concern about an inmate named Tyler Hearne who is incarcerated at the Michael Unit. Tyler has been targeted for his sexuality and gender identity, and has endured theft, violent attacks, and multiple sexual assaults. He currently fears for his life and safety. I urge you to move Tyler to Safe Keeping so that he can complete his prison sentence without the fear of assault or brutality.v
