Police Chief Zimmerman Briefs Committee on Officer Retention and Body Cameras

March 18, 2015 (San Diego) San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman came to the Public Safety and Livable Neighborhoods Committee to brief them on both body cameras and recruitment and retention. The first brief was on body cameras. Councilmember Marti Emerald started by pointing out that “we are trying to rebuild trust in the community. And to be able to verify what is happening out there between the community and police officers.”

This is part of the strategy for the city, and it was also mentioned in the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF) presented on March 17, 2015. Chief Zimmerman said that with “600 cameras we are the largest police department in the nation with that many body cameras.”

Chief Zimmerman explained that she is a big proponent of them, “when you are being videotaped your actions are likely going to improve.”
