4 CORNERS OF LIFE 3rd Annual Community Celebration, South East San Diego

Join us for the 3rd Annual 4 Corners Of Life Celebration where we feature community member leadership awards, free food, music, dance groups, poetry, live art, educational booths as well as crafts for sale and much more.

The celebration will take place July 2nd, 2016 from 1PM-6PM at the corner of Euclid Ave. and Imperial Ave. This celebration is FREE to the community. The only thing we ask that you bring is your peace and love.

The sole purpose for this LIFE celebration is to engrave 4 Corners Of “LIFE” into the hearts of community members. Why you ask? Because Love, Unity, Dignity and Honor resides within South East San Diego. Who is our future? The youth. Why change such a negative name for such a strong neighborhood? Because the youth are growing up thinking its normal to accept, commit, cover up or aid murder. It all starts with our choice of words. There’s a reason why We say I LOVE YOU, because of the power of words. Words spoken followed by action is changing the negative and dark narrative this community has been known for however by saying LIFE, by embracing to speak love and positivity back into our world. It starts with us.

4 Corners Of Life may sound like just a name change to some but for the people who live in South East San Diego it lifts spirits, it embraces chance and change, it demands respect and most importantly it “paves a greater futures” into the youth’s heart by changing what they accept and act on.

#4cornersofLIFE is its own entity. It is developing into spoken hope, near future action. We not only plan on speaking peace in South East and supporting those who have already been working hard toward peace but also plan on creating physical change. Please take the time to get to know the neighborhoods around you. You can always create change. It only takes one driven, consistent and caring person. COME and help us Celebrate!

4 Corners of Life was established July 5th 2013 and works throughout the year to bring social equality, safe place making, jobs creation and peace in South East San Diego while fighting for justice in all unjust settings. July 5th 2013 was also its first ever 4 Corners Of LIFE Community Celebration.

Community Call to Action

We are working heavily on issues related to the criminalization of the homeless, and we need your help. Please keep your eyes and ears out for the following:

1. Abatement Sweeps (who is conducting them, what time they are conducted, what happens)
2. Individual belongings being thrown in the trash or trash trucks by police or city officials
3. Harassment of homeless individuals by police or city officials
4. Citations for Illegal Lodging between the hours of 9pm – 5:30am
5. Citations for Encroachment
6. Being unable to reclaim belongings that were taken during the sweeps
7. Destruction of individuals’ property by police or city officials

The more documentation we have of these incidents, the more likely we are to bring real change to San Diego.

San Diego ACLU Seeks Public Records Related to SDPD’s Militaristic Tactics at Trump Rally

Many San Diegans dismayed at the City of San Diego’s unprecedented response to public protest

Published: June 2, 2016

SAN DIEGO – In response to the community’s objections about San Diego Police Department’s unprecedented show of force at last Friday’s Trump Rally, the ACLU of San Diego & Imperial Counties sent a letter early today requesting public records from the City of San Diego concerning SDPD’s operations.

Along with Alliance San Diego, the American Friends Service Committee, National Lawyers Guild, and Union Del Barrio, the San Diego ACLU has been responding to community members’ questions and complaints in the aftermath of what community leaders believe was an unacceptable show of excessive force by SDPD against peaceful protestors. Citing the California Public Records Act (CPRA), the ACLU is requesting the following information:

  • How many officers? The number of and specific law enforcement agencies and special units, including plainclothes officers, who were dispatched or who in some capacity participated in responding to the protests;
  • How much did it cost and who paid for it? The amount of money that was spent on the law enforcement response to the protests, and sources of private funding, if any;
  • How did SDPD prepare for the protest? The protocol used by SDPD to prepare for public protest, and whether this deviated from standard SDPD protest protocol in any way;
  • How many arrests? The number of arrests, both of adults and minors, and what offenses they were charged with;
  • How many citizens’ complaints? Complaints filed regarding the conduct of any law enforcement officers;
  • Who decided to remove separation barriers before the crowds had dispersed and why? What efforts were made to keep supporters and detractors separated and safe after crowds began exiting the Convention Center? What efforts were made to disperse the crowds before an unlawful assembly was declared? How many times and was an unlawful assembly announced?
  • Para-Military Equipment. The protocol for deteriming to use riot gear and tanks in residential communities.
  • How was it determined that the protest had become an “unlawful assembly”? The criteria and the process or protocol used to determine and declare “unlawful assembly” (or multiple “unlawful assemblies” in various locations); and
  • Video of the protests and arrested taken from law enforcement officer’s body cameras or dash cameras.

Because of the palpable feelings of apprehension and frustration felt particularly by residents of the Barrio Logan neighborhood, the San Diego ACLU additionally requested specific information on the events that took place there at approximately 4:20 PM. The stark difference in approach compared to other, similar peaceful demonstrations, including the use of riot gear, tanks (or tank-like vehicles), prompted the ACLU to ask for more information to determine whether SDPD’s action deviated from standard SDPD protest protocol in anyway.

The coalition members were disturbed last night to read the log of the 33 people arrested at the protest. Nearly half of the arrests occurred in Barrio Logan, and a young boy of color faces the most serious charges.
