>ARRIVE AT 5-5:30pm to clear metal detector and secure seat! <
A coalition of the Black Student Justice Coalition, Women Occupy –
San Diego and United Against Police Terror – San Diego is calling
upon the San Diego City Council to reform the San Diego Citizens
Review Board on Police Practices. We have a real chance of
getting an independent Community Review Board with subpoena
powers – SHOW UP to support this call!

City Charter reforms essential to the effective functioning of civilian and
community oversight of the SDPD include:

1. Independent investigators and subpoena power, as provided to the San
Diego County Law Enforcement Review Board by the voters in 1990
(Proposition A).

2. Intake, tracking and review of all complaints filed is done by the CRB
rather than by SDPD Internal Affairs, also as modeled by the San Diego
County Law Enforcement Review Board approved by the voters in 1990.

For Michael Dowd, being a police officer wasn’t a calling, it was just a job- and, assigned to the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York, not an easy or lucrative one. Seizing the opportunity to profit, he stole money from drug dealers, eventually recruiting his partner into an expanding criminal ring. Their 1992 arrest exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD. Weaving together Dowd’s revelatory testimony from the investigation, dramatic surveillance footage and interviews with the primary players, The Seven Five tells his incendiary tale.

New York Post says, “Corrupt-cop doc THE SEVEN FIVE is a must see.”

Variety says, “Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Dowd’s confession — and Russell’s documentary — is the total ease with which Dowd reconciles his twin careers as all-out gangster and dedicated cop.”

Village Voice says, “It’s familiar and infuriating – but enthralling.”

PopMatters says, “Tiller Russell’s thrill ride of a documentary is constructed out of an intoxicating mosaic of archival news and surveillance footage.”

Scars & Stripes 4 Mile March San Diego a call by Coalition Against Police Violence

July 4th, 2015

The epidemic of police violence in America is alarming, and disproportionately affects communities of color. While the American government does not track homicide data of state law enforcement bodies, a private organization called Killed By Police began collecting data in May 2013, and its data reveals a disturbing pattern. According to Killed by Police, as of April, 20, 2015, American police have killed 351 people. That is three homicides per day, or roughly one stolen life every 8 hours. Of those 351 homicides, 231 victims were members of a community of color or not identified by race.

When we compare this data to the rates of homicide by police in other countries, the picture becomes all the more disturbing. China, whose population is four and half times greater than the U.S., had only 12 homicides by police in the entire year of 2014. The U.K. had only one death by police in 2014. And Germany and Ireland had none. It is disheartening that among industrialized nations, the U.S. leads in only two categories: the number of people incarcerated and the rate at which civilians are killed by law enforcement. This should not be.

The CAPV will combat these issues on multiple fronts, including a nationwide boycott and the nationwide march on July 4th. The march will remind the world that there is a certain segment of Americans who do not enjoy the independence that was declared on July 4, 1776. We will lift up the names of the Americans—Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latino, and Arab—who have been brutalized and killed by America’s police. We will march for the Scars & Stripes inflicted upon our people by the American government, which is complicit through its silence in this oppression. We will rally for a day when the truth that all men are created equal, and endowed with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, is finally self-evident. And we will fight for transparency, accountability, and reformation of the American (in)justice system.

National Association Against Police Brutality – NAAPB is launching PIRP a Police Incident Reporting Platform, go to pirp.naapb.org for more info, NAAPB will be partnering with community service organizations such as UAPTSD all across the country to provide them with a platform to report police incidents. And NAAPB will be assisting those organizations with educating and organizing their communities on reforming the Criminal justice system and ending police brutality. #WHITEABLENORMATIVESUPREMACY

Remember that #ScientificRacism also aimed in creating a physical and intellectually superior race.

Serious change needs to happen the way we treat the neuro divergent and mentally ill. HALF of all who come into contact with police have mental illness, 1 in 4 mentally ill who come into contact with police will be killedbypolice and those with a mental disability or with a mental illness are one of the largest growing populations in the prison system; whether developed by social or environmental influence OR by the prison conditions themselves.
From a historical viewpoint- “Deinstitutionalization” didn’t work. We just switched institutions. Instead of being in hospitals and “insane asulyms” people who are mentally ill are now in jails and prisons. “Deinstitutionalization” has created the mental illness crisis by discharging people from public psychiatric hospitals without ensuring that they received the medication and rehabilitation services and housing necessary for them to live successfully in the community. “Deinstitutionalization” also further exacerbated the situation because, once the public psychiatric beds had been closed, they were not available for people who later became mentally ill, and this situation continues up to the present. Consequently, approximately 2.2 million severely mentally ill people do not receive any psychiatric treatment nor adequate wrap around services to ensure interdependence.

Emory Douglas: The Art of The Black Panthers on Vimeo

Emory Douglas was the Revolutionary Artist and Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party. Through archival footage and conversations with Emory we share his story, alongside the rise and fall of the Panthers. He used his art as a weapon in the Black Panther Party’s struggle for civil rights and today Emory continues to give a voice to the voiceless. His art and what The Panthers fought for are still as relevant as ever.

Time to Kill the Term “Officer-Involved Shooting”

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/7428072
“Why has the media taken to reporting the shooting and killing of people by law enforcement this way? It is dangerously misleading. Moreover, it is not just the headline that employs such ambiguous language. Typically, the report goes on to explain that the person “died” as a result of the “officer-involved shooting.” This use of such euphemistic language to describe an incident in which an organ of the state has killed a citizen is not only bizarre, it should alarm us. As Orwell so eloquently explained in such essays as “Politics and the English Language” and “Writers and Leviathan,” such deliberately misleading and opaque use of language can pose a danger to the fabric of democracy. If we do not write clearly about our political system and public institutions, we will cease to think very clearly about them too.”

Police Brutality: Why Is Baltimore Not Outraged At Mya Hall’s Death? AnonHQ

“While the deaths of black men like Mike Brown, Eric Garner, and Freddie Gray have outraged people on social media platforms and on streets, little or no attention has been given to Hall’s death. She and her friend have been written off as troubled. Hall’s name is missing from Reddit, an online platform usually supportive of transgender victims of violence and black victims of police brutality.
While protests like those in Baltimore remind us that #BlackLivesMatter, the lives of fallen black women tend to matter less when it comes to summoning public outrage over their deaths. “When black men are killed, slogans like “hands up, don’t shoot” or “I can’t breathe” echo across the country. When black girls and women like Boyd are killed, there is comparative silence,” writes Darnell Moore”

6 Reasons Why Black Cops Are Just As or More Likely To Propagate Racism in Law Enforcement – Atlanta Blackstar

“Policing Tactics Are Inherently Racially Biased
The training for all police officers requires them to adapt a certain level of racial bias whether they are immediately aware of it or not. According to a report from Vox, policing is much heavier in predominantly poor, segregated neighborhoods with predominantly Black residents. The concentrated efforts in these particular neighborhoods leads to a disproportionate number of arrests in the Black community and drastically skews the way the entire police culture treats
