#Uaptsd.org Press Conference 1/4/2016; Lives Killed by the San Diego Police Department

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 2, 2015

WHEN: Monday, January 4th, 2016 @ 11:30am

WHERE: Press Conference in front of the San Diego Police Department

San Diego Police Headquarters, 1401 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101

On Monday, January 4, 2016, Join Uaptsd.org as we will hold a press conference on Monday, January 4th 2016 at 11:30am at the San Diego Police Headquarters, 1401 Broadway, San Diego, CA 92101 to release our list of those who had their lives stolen at the hands of the San Diego Police Department. The first stage of this project will be available for review to the press and is public on our website Uaptsd.org.

Stolen Lives: Killed by San Diego Law Enforcement

Victims Brutalized by San Diego Law Enforcement

In San Diego County,  we have no comprehensive record of the number of people killed by law enforcement. As stated in the Guardian’s The Counted “Such accounting is a prerequisite for an informed public discussion about the use of force by every branch of law enforcement.”

This list has been collected by Uaptsd.org on a grassroots level from media outlets published over the span of 35 years. From 1980 to the present, almost 250 lives have been killed by the San Diego Police Department alone. Hundreds more brutalized, while many if not all instances are ruled as justified by the District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis. We are releasing this full list in order for the public to understand the magnitude at which police killings affect the City of San Diego and to also express our dissatisfaction with the Officer Involved shooting report released by Dumanis back in February of 2015.

Each person killed had a name, a family, a life before they were taken at the hands of individuals who are stated to “protect and serve” our community. These individuals could be alive today if the San Diego Police department had been accountable for the use of lethal force during encounters.

We are also in support of Women Occupy San Diego’s proposal for this list reinforces the need for INDEPENDENT investigation and legal counsel of officer-involved deaths. “Any institution that investigates itself has a built-in conflict of interest. We believe this to be true of the San Diego Police Department, City Attorney and District Attorney representing San Diego City law enforcement powers, and it must change.”

Time to Kill the Term “Officer-Involved Shooting”

Why has the media taken to reporting the shooting and killing of people by law enforcement this way? It is dangerously misleading. Moreover, it is not just the headline that employs such ambiguous language. Typically, the report goes on to explain that the person “died” as a result of the “officer-involved shooting.” This use of such euphemistic language to describe an incident in which an organ of the state has killed a citizen is not only bizarre, it should alarm us. As Orwell so eloquently explained in such essays as “Politics and the English Language” and “Writers and Leviathan,” such deliberately misleading and opaque use of language can pose a danger to the fabric of democracy. If we do not write clearly about our political system and public institutions, we will cease to think very clearly about them too. ttp://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/7428072
