San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman changed the body camera policy as soon as it was clear a lethal encounter between a veteran of the force and a homeless man in the Midway District was not recorded for posterity, or at least the District Attorney, Officers will from now on have to set those body cams to event mode when they are dispatched to a call with a potential encounter and not at arrival.
That said, the fight not to release the footage from security cameras fits a pattern in police departments large and small. This is to fight any releases that might make officers look bad this is a fight against transparency and accountability
