Daniel Sisson

Daniel James Sisson died after spending two days in the county jail in Vista. His family wants to know why.

Over the past decade or so, about 240,000 people have been booked into the Vista jail. Thirteen of them died while in custody. Sisson’s death was the most recent.

Capt. Edna Milloy, who runs the jail formally known as the Vista Detention Facility, said she could not comment on the specifics of the recent death, citing medical privacy and investigative issues.

But she did say the facility follows protocols set out for evaluating and monitoring the medical needs of inmates.

Sisson was in jail for a probation violation. His arrest history includes drug-related charges.

According to the San Diego County medical examiner’s office, sheriff’s deputies found Sisson in his cell June 25, unresponsive and not breathing.

Deputies started resuscitation efforts, which were taken over by paramedics called to the scene. But they could not revive Marion Michelle Lopez, 43, who was declared dead at 10:35 p.m. June 23.

Sisson’s family said they are not pointing fingers, but they want answers, and hired an outside firm to do an autopsy on the young man.

Sisson’s mother, Shaunda Brummett, said Friday that investigators told her that her son had been throwing up in the hours before he died.

“We want to know if he asked for care,” Sisson’s uncle, Mike Russo, said, “and if he was given adequate care.”
