>ARRIVE AT 5-5:30pm to clear metal detector and secure seat! <
A coalition of the Black Student Justice Coalition, Women Occupy –
San Diego and United Against Police Terror – San Diego is calling
upon the San Diego City Council to reform the San Diego Citizens
Review Board on Police Practices. We have a real chance of
getting an independent Community Review Board with subpoena
powers – SHOW UP to support this call!

City Charter reforms essential to the effective functioning of civilian and
community oversight of the SDPD include:

1. Independent investigators and subpoena power, as provided to the San
Diego County Law Enforcement Review Board by the voters in 1990
(Proposition A).

2. Intake, tracking and review of all complaints filed is done by the CRB
rather than by SDPD Internal Affairs, also as modeled by the San Diego
County Law Enforcement Review Board approved by the voters in 1990.

THE HAND THAT FEEDS – May 22-28

This documentary hit from the SDLFF 2015 follows deli employee Mahoma López and his co-workers as they rally together to fight for fair wages and improved working conditions against their ruthless employer.

Synopsis: At a popular bakery café in New York’s Upper East Side, undocumented immigrant workers face sub-legal wages, dangerous machinery, and abusive managers who will fire them for calling in sick. Mild-mannered sandwich maker Mahoma López has never been interested in politics, but in January 2012, he convinces a small group of his co-workers to fight back. Risking deportation and the loss of their livelihood, the workers team up with a diverse crew of innovative young organizers and take the unusual step of forming their own independent union, launching themselves on a journey that will test the limits of their resolve.

THE SEVEN FIVE @ Digital Gym CINEMA For Michael Dowd, being a police officer wasn’t a calling, it was just a job- and, assigned to the 75th Precinct in crime-ridden East New York, not an easy or lucrative one. Seizing the opportunity to profit, he stole money from drug dealers, eventually recruiting his partner into an expanding criminal ring. Their 1992 arrest exposed widespread corruption in the NYPD. Weaving together Dowd’s revelatory testimony from the investigation, dramatic surveillance footage and interviews with the primary players, The Seven Five tells his incendiary tale.

May 21: A CALL TO ACTION TO END STATE VIOLENCE AGAINST BLACK WOMEN AND GIRLS

inciteblog's avatarINCITE! Blog

Black Youth Project 100, Ferguson Action, and #BlackLivesMatter have called a

National Day of Action to End State Violence Against Black Women and Girls:

THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2015

JOIN in mourning the lives of Black women and girls lost to police violence, and in lifting up the voices, experiences and demands of Black women targeted by police!

Black women – queer and not queer, transgender and not transgender – are killed, beaten, profiled, and harassed by police across the country in many of the same ways as Black men, whether it’s “broken windows policing,” “driving while Black,” or the “war on drugs.” For example:

 • Racial profiling studies analyzing the experiences of Black women separately from those of men of color conclude “for both men and women there is an identical pattern of stops by race/ethnicity.”
 • In New York City, racial disparities in stops are the same for Black women as…

ADAPT Celebrate People's History Poster Celebrate People’s History ADAPT poster
[Red silhouette of a man in a wheelchair with his fist raised and “free our people!” and the ADAPT logo on his chest.]
In the film Pinkwashing Exposed: Seattle Fights Back, Stefanie Fox, Co-Director of Organizing for Jewish Voice for Peace, has the ADAPT Celebrate People’s History poster on the wall behind her. ADAPT is a direct action disability rights organization that has fought for accessibility for disabled people for decades in the United States. This poster is one of a number of posters on the wall of what looks like Fox’s office and it is, likely, coincidental that it is in the film at all. But, it isn’t coincidental that a queer organizer against Israeli apartheid has a disability organizing poster on her wall because these struggles are connected. Israel produces tremendous suffering and misery because…
